Ministry of Tourism Targets 25 Percent of Tourists to Shift Away from South Bali
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) aims to shift around 25 percent of tourists from South Bali, particularly Badung Regency, to other areas of Bali.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, stated in Badung Regency on Wednesday that he hopes to achieve this target between 2025 and 2030, as South Bali is nearing a state of overtourism.
"Yesterday, we received a commitment from the Badung Regent, who has long been a driving force, to actively become an agent in redistributing the number of tourists to other regencies or destinations outside of South Bali," he said after giving a public lecture at Bali Tourism Polytechnic.
To achieve this target, Kemenparekraf plans to collaborate with national and international media to tour North Bali as the first option.
"We anticipate overtourism by activating activities in Buleleng, in Pemuteran Tourist Village, then in Singaraja City with city tours, and also to places offering creative economy products," said Sandiaga.
This media tour is being held from August 9-11, 2024, and the Minister is confident that information about tourist destinations in North Bali will influence tourist visits.
News coverage is considered a concrete step in redistributing the number of tourists, and in the future, this will extend not only to North Bali but also to East Bali (Karangasem) and West Bali (Jembrana).
"This is like a snowball effect; once it's reported and becomes a trend, there will be a change in travel patterns, so tourists won't just be concentrated in South Bali but also in other regions," said Sandiaga Uno.
He acknowledged that the concentration of tourists in South Badung, particularly in the southern part, is due to the established ecosystem there. However, tourists themselves do not strictly differentiate between regions in Bali.
"In their minds, they only think of Bali as a whole, so if we take them to North, West, or South Bali, they are still open because they only know Bali as the island of Bali. So let's take this opportunity because they don't specifically mention which part of Bali," Sandiaga concluded.
